People often say that is is better to not regret anything in their lives because it is unhealthy to dwell on past mistakes as past can not be undone. While I agree that this can be a good enough reason, I don’t think it provides any actual advice or reasoning deeper than just health concerns. I stand by the idea that regretting simply does not make sense from a logical point of view. According to Oxford Languages, regret is a feeling of sadness, repentance, or disappointment over an occurrence or something that one has done or failed to do. Where does the feeling of regret come from? People face regret when they face the consequences of their past actions and wish to have made a different choice. A person who regrets something feels as they could have done better, tried harder. However, if you believe that you always do what you think is best there should be no room for regrets. By this principle choosing something means deeming it the best option in accordance with one’s goals and beliefs. If I think that a past decision is not the best out of the available, I remind myself that I am not the one, who made it, my past self is. Current I have a different perspective because of the gained experience and reconsideration. To put is simply, I just think to myself that current me would have made a different choice if placed in the circumstances of my past self. No regrets, no beating myself up, just reevaluation based on change of perspective. As long as I make choices I find the best, there is nothing to regret. If you don’t choose the option you think is best based on the circumstances, you have an issue to think about.
