Whenever I get a creative writing assignment I always get carried away by going on tangents or trying to make a reference to a popular story. I it weren’t for the 450 word limit and a limited number space on paper I would craft a story with the most ridiculous ideas being expanded upon for over a thousand words and that is just for the beginning. While it is clear to me that I am expected to follow the check list of mark worthy elements instead of actually building an imaginative story, it is actually easier to write when there is an inner motivation to do it. Putting assignments aside, I want to share my favorite style of writing that I call absurd.
By absurd I mean expanding on the most irrelevant details and making them the central point of the episode while adding details that give more questions that answers. I do that by integrating any idea that is currently residing in my mind using the most unconventional methods. I feel like is is inspired by the works of Hirohiko Araki and Lewis Caroll. Both of them manage to make the most bizarre ideas into coherent stories that engage the reader. Although, currently I do not have any inclination to write for the reader, I just want to language in an interesting way and use my imagination.
One of the most important aspects of this style is that I try to achieve full improvisation with minimal pre-planning. That is also a trait I have noticed in the works of aforementioned authors. Writing without planning or hard constraints prevents from running into creative walls where nothing seems to be a right development. That way I can save both time and energy and have a creative exercise. I am looking forward to using this style more in actual free environment without the academic constrains. That and the fact that I enjoy practicing speed typing makes me consider creating a short(or long) story section on the blog just to have a place to displace my aimless writing.
